WWE Raw results, recap, grades: Carmella wins Raw women’s title opportunity at Money in the Bank

With just weeks to go until the Money in the Bank event, WWE did a lot of heavy lifting during Raw on Monday night. In the headline moment, it was announced that Rhea Ripley was not medically cleared for her planned title challenge against Raw women’s champion Bianca Belair, leaving a big spot needing to be filled.

Carmella would be the woman to get the newly available opportunity, winning a fatal five-way to kick off the show and cement her spot in the title match on July 2 in Las Vegas.

Another title match was added to Money in the Bank, with Bobby Lashley beating Chad Gable, Otis and Theory in one night to earn a shot at Theory’s United States title at the upcoming event.

CBS Sports was with you all night with recaps and highlights of all the action from Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Bianca Belair receives a new Money in the Bank title challenger

Bianca Belair opened the show with an announcement that Rhea Ripley was not medically cleared for their match at Money in the Bank for Belair’s Raw women’s championship. Belair then announced that Alexa Bliss, Liv Morgan, Carmella, Asuka and Becky Lynch would compete later in the night for a shot at the title at Money in the Bank. This led to the expected parade of interruptions from the women involved in the match.

Carmella def. Alexa Bliss, Liv Morgan, Asuka & Becky Lynch via pinfall after hitting Morgan with a superkick. The win puts Carmella in the Raw women’s title match at Money in the Bank. Of note, Carmella was the inaugural winner of a women’s Money in the Bank match, making the event something of her “trademark show.”

Carmella made some sense as the choice to face Belair here. Her presence isn’t needed in the ladder match at Money in the Bank and she is just legitimate enough given her history to make a fine late-replacement challenger. A Carmella title challenge is not likely to get anyone excited or bring the same sense of a possible title change that Ripley provided, but sometimes you just need a patch to go over a hole left by an injury. That’s what Carmella is. Grade: B-

What else happened on WWE Raw?

  • Vince McMahon made an appearance talking up the history of Raw before hyping up that John Cena would appear on next week’s show. Just as he did on SmackDown, McMahon appeared to be making a point to show up and make sure his face was on TV during the investigation into allegations of misconduct involving hush money paid to a female employee with whom he’d had an affair.
  • Omos def. Riddle via pinfall in a Money in the Bank qualifying match. Riddle was still nursing sore ribs from his SmackDown match with Roman Reigns. After the match, Seth Rollins made his way to the ring and hit a curbstomp on Riddle, who’d called him out in a pre-match promo.
  • Bobby Lashley interrupted an Austin Theory posedown. As Theory posed in the center of the ring, including taking a few shots at John Cena, Lashley popped in the ring behind Theory before hitting the United States champion with a spear.
  • Angelo Dawkins def. Jey Uso via pinfall with a sit-out powerbomb.
  • Elias hit Kevin Owens with a guitar after Owens interrupted his concert. Elias and Ezekiel were shown having a “conversation” backstage earlier in the show and Ezekiel also appeared on the Tron when Owens interrupted. After Owens stumbled to the backstage area and said he was challenging Elias or Ezekiel to a match next week on Raw, at which point Ezekiel showed up and accepted the challenge.
  • Bobby Lashley def. Chad Gable, Otis and Theory in a gauntlet match. Earlier in the show, Theory said he would give Lashley a shot at the United States title at Money in the Bank if he could beat three opponents in a row, which Lashley did, last pinning Theory with a counter to the A-Town Down.
  • AJ Styles def. Ciampa via pinfall after a Phenomenal Forearm. The match came about after Styles attacked Miz during Miz TV and Ciampa blindsided Styles.
  • Asuka def. Becky Lynch via pinfall in a Money in the Bank qualifying match. Lynch, upset with her loss in the fatal five-way earlier in the night, demanded an opportunity to qualify for the Money in the Bank ladder match. She was told she’d have her opportunity later in the night against Asuka but was finished off by a big kick, leading her to have a big post-match tantrum before the show went off the air.
